Keep the neutral pieces and pack the spooky ones. White pumpkins, dried stems and a candle lamp carry over from Halloween to Thanksgiving. The black paper house, bats and anything with a skull go in a box. The swap should take about ten minutes.
Sort the shelf into keep, swap and pack
Take everything off the shelf and make three piles. Keep: white or cream pumpkins, dried wheat or branches, ceramic pieces and any books that were part of the scene. Swap: black taper candles and dark pumpkins for warm ones in rust, amber or cream. Pack: bats, paper houses, plastic props and anything that only reads as Halloween. If you styled the shelf from this one-shelf Halloween idea, the paper house is the main thing to pack.

Pack the Halloween pieces so they come out clean
Use one shallow box and wrap paper pieces in plain paper so the corners do not bend. Put the lighter items on top and write the contents on the lid. A single box is a good limit, because a pile of loose props in a closet is what makes people skip the swap next year.

Add one warm layer
One new object is usually enough. A small amber candle lamp or a bundle of dried wheat tied with twine warms the shelf without adding clutter, and a lamp avoids an open flame beside dried stems. This piece on candle lamps explains why I prefer them near dry decor. Keep the shelf to three to five objects and leave the books on the other shelves alone.

Carry the same three pieces to the mantel
If you have a mantel, use the pieces you kept there too: a vase of dried stems, one cream pumpkin and a brass candle holder. Count the objects and stop at five, as in my five-object fall mantel layout. The repeated colors tie the room together without a new purchase.

Finish at the entry
A lamp, a small bowl of pears and one cream pumpkin on the console are enough for Thanksgiving guests. This small fall entryway guide shows how to do it while keeping the walkway clear. Fruit you will eat is better than decor that sits until it goes soft.

Check the shelf once with the lights on
Stand where you usually sit and look at the shelf. Can you still reach the books you read? Does anything sit too close to the lamp bulb? If the shelf looks busy, take one object away. The same shelf can handle the rest of November without another change.
