The best light bulb color for a cozy bedroom is warm white, 2700K to 3000K. ENERGY STAR says 2700K to 3000K is preferred for homes, and lower numbers on the Kelvin scale look more yellow while higher numbers look whiter and bluer.
What the Kelvin number means
Light color is measured in Kelvin (K). According to ENERGY STAR’s light factsheet, lower K means warmer, yellowish light and higher K means cooler, bluer light. A 2700K bulb matches the glow of an old incandescent bulb. A 3000K bulb is slightly whiter. A 5000K bulb looks like daylight, which suits a garage better than a bedroom.

Pick 2700K for the main glow
Use 2700K in bedside lamps and ceiling fixtures if you want the softest, warmest feel. It makes cream, rust and wood tones look deeper. If your walls are cool gray or white, 3000K can look cleaner while still reading as warm. Whatever you pick, use the same number in every lamp in the room, because mixed colors look patchy side by side.

Check the brightness, not just the color
Color temperature and brightness are separate choices. Look for lumens on the box. A bedside lamp for reading needs more light than a lamp that only adds a glow. Pair the warm bulb with a dimmer or a lamp with a low setting so you can lower the light in the evening. This layered lighting guide explains how to combine general, task and accent light.

Choose the lamp shade carefully
A linen or cream shade diffuses the light and softens the glow, while a dark shade makes the room look moodier but needs a brighter bulb. Keep the bare bulb out of view, because glare breaks the cozy effect. A floor lamp near a reading chair adds a second pool of light so the ceiling fixture can stay off.

Where to place the lamps
Put one lamp on each side of the bed if you have room. If the nightstand is too small, a plug-in wall sconce frees the surface, as shown in these small bedroom bedside ideas. Keep lamp cords away from walkways and do not tuck them under rugs. A single table lamp, a floor lamp and a bedside light give three low sources instead of one bright ceiling light.

What to skip in a bedroom
Skip bulbs labeled daylight or cool white, and skip very bright overhead lights in the evening. Skip colored smart bulbs for the main lamps; a plain warm white bulb is easier to live with. If you like candle light, use a battery candle or a candle lamp near fabric, as I explain in this post on candle lamps.
A bulb to start with
If you want one bulb to try first, the 8-pack below is 2700K, 800 lumens and dimmable, so it fits most bedside lamps.
A quick bulb checklist
Check four things on the box: color temperature (2700K to 3000K), brightness in lumens, whether the bulb is dimmable and whether it fits your lamp base and shade. Match the number across the room and swap one lamp first to see the difference before you change them all.
